Leo Toney

Leo A. Toney of Ontario, 99, passed away at home on Monday, May 20, 2024. He was born at Cambridge, Idaho on October 10, 1924 to parents Fred and Rose Phillips Toney. He grew up on the family farm with brother Billy and sisters Violet, Lillian and Irene. Another brother, Allen, died at the age of 13 from an infection that modern-day antibiotics would have cured.

In 1949 Leo married Shirley Morris and they had six children which they raised on the family farm in Cambridge. They were later divorced. He married Georgia Ogle in l981 and they had been married for 43 years at the time of his passing.

Leo was a kind, hard-working, humble man—always wanting to help others. He was adamant about not wanting a lengthy, flowery obituary, but those who knew him know that he lived a full and happy life because of his many friends and the family that he valued. Leo’s life was based in agriculture– starting at a young age working with his father on their family farm and continuing through various avenues. He worked for a number of ranchers in the Cambridge-Indian Valley area and then worked at the Cambridge Elevator for several years. He spent a number of years working at Consumers Co-op in Cambridge, and then at Cenex co-ops in Winnemucca, Nevada and Nyssa, Oregon. He continued driving the fertilizer truck at Nyssa into his eighties.

His favorite pastimes included hunting, fishing and gardening. Leo grew a large garden each year and loved to share his bounty. He remained active until the last month, still driving, helping others, and had already planted much of this year’s garden.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings. He is survived by his wife Georgia and his six children: Linda (Tracey) Langley, Payette, ID; Keith (Kerry) Toney, Ozark, AL; Gordon (Carolyn) Toney, Puyallup, WA; Janet Henry (Bothell, WA); Bruce (Diane) Toney, McMinnville, OR; and Gayle Toney, Bothell, WA as well as nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two step-daughters: Lila Aulman of Harrisburg, OR and Connie Aulman of Ontario.

Services will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Weiser at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2024 followed by internment at the Cambridge Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Lienkemper Thomason Funeral Home of Weiser.
