This is what the Bert Harpham Legion Post in Council looked like when it was first built. This photo came from the American Legion Weekly magazine for April 4, 1924. The building still stands on the SW corner of Moser and Main, and is now a private home.

1899 – Part 2

Winkler & Cox shop. Bill and Lewis Winkler were probably the main instigators of having this blacksmith shop built in 1899. This business was part of the migration of Council growth toward where the railroad depot was planned. Notice the new school on the hill in the background.

Weiser, May 19, 1899. A crowd gathers around Thomas Bates who stands on the newly-laid railroad ties with a spike-driving hammer in his hands as he is about to drive the first spike of the Pacific & Idaho Northern Railway line.
