The steamship Norma at Portland after it was taken through Hells Canyon.

1891 – Part 4

This photo dates to 1896 and has more buildings than in 1891, but it illustrates where the first business establishments were located in 1891. The Wilkerson / Hancock hotel is the second building from the left. The Moser Hotel is on the far right, and the fenced area in the right foreground is where John Peters’ store burned down two years before this picture was taken. The same view of this photo can’t be duplicated well today, as the back side of M&W Market blocks pretty much this whole view.

1891 – Part 3

Painted across the false front of this building is ‘Council Valley Hotel - Meals 25 c.’ This is the first known photo taken in what is now Council. This was might have been the first business structure in what would become the town - built in 1891 by Milt Wilkerson and John Hancock. It stood about where the Ace Saloon is today. It’s possible that John Peters may have already established a store shortly before this, about where the M&W parking lot is today.

1891– Part 2, Mixed Messages

This is a road north of McCall about 1902, with Little Payette Lake visible in the distance. (The lake was enlarged in 1926 when a small dam was added.) This is probably a typical example of early roads to mining camps. Notice the rocks.
