202 Illinois Now a ‘Nuisance’
Editor’s Note: City of Council confirmed on Tuesday morning the 22nd that they are waiting for bids from two companies to complete the demo work. Also, a version of this story was published on our Facebook page on Oct. 17.
The Council City Council held a special meeting on the 16th of October, at noon. In this meeting they passed Resolution 2024-05 declaring 202 Illinois Ave, the former Council Valley Market, a ‘nuisance’.
This action gives the city the ability to move forward with demolition and cleanup as soon as possible. The city does have a contractor coming on the 17th to give their opinion and an estimate of cost. They are also working with at least one other contractor to get a bid. According to the resolution, this cleanup will be at the expense of the owner of the property.
Ashley Scott, the City Clerk, told us that the city’s priority is to get the road open and back to normal as soon as possible. However, to get the road open, the remains of the building need to be taken care of first. A contractor needs to be selected for the work. And, this contractor needs to asses the wall between 202 and 204 Illinois Ave (Huptye) to ensure that demolition won’t cause more damage to that building. The Huptye building needed additional inspections which we are told, were not completed until October 16th.
