#7 Owen Hatfield leaves three Notus defenders behind on an 85-yard score.

The Lumberjacks used a physical and explosive running attack to manhandle the 2A Notus Pirates Friday. Council totaled 440 rushing yards on the day.

Leading the attack was quarterback Owen Hatfield, who had 242 yards on 14 carries on the ground, including four rushing touchdowns. Garrison Zielinski nearly cleared the century mark as well, with 95 yards on 7 carries and 1 TD. Solid contributions from Jim Tucker, Decker McLinn, and Brody Davis helped add to the total. Tucker, a freshman, scored his first touchdown in varsity ball with a hard-fought 28-yard score.

The few times the Lumberjacks did throw the ball, they were a total of 5 for 5 between the goal lines (the only two incompletions were on conversion attempts). Decker McLinn exploded down the sidelines for a 36-yard receiving touchdown earlier in the game and Garrison Zielinski made another one of his trademark over-the-shoulder touchdown grabs (a 19-yarder) for Council’s final score.

The unsung heroes of the game were the linemen. The holes were big and plentiful on offense.

On defense, Remington Crowell was a major problem for the Pirates all night, muscling his way to 4 sacks and 2 quarterback pressures. Wade Vining, Council’s other big man, was all over the field for the Lumberjacks, amassing 6.5 tackles. Decker McLinn was close behind with 6.

It was Council’s most complete game so far. They now have a bye week and will then turn their attention to league play, starting at home vs. Horseshoe Bend on Sept. 27. It will also be Homecoming.

Notes on the Lewis County Game

We missed the deadline for the first game of the year against Lewis County, and didn’t have the stats, so we wanted to do a follow-up. Council’s first game of the year - with some new players and new coaches - was about what you might expect. There were some rough spots, particularly with ball control, that allowed Lewis County to stay closer than the Lumberjacks might have wanted. It seemed as if Council spent three quarters of the night on defense, but the Lumberjacks were still able to dominate the game physically, winning 28-8.
