The first two weeks of football were distinctly different. Week 1 found Council facing Lakeside, a 2A opponent from Plummer that was expected to contend in their league. However, with the departure of a couple of key players, the game didn’t quite live up to expectation. Council quickly seized a large lead, up 48-0 at halftime, and had pulled most of their starters before the end of the first quarter. The final score was 54-0. Jim Tucker led with three touchdowns. Also adding to the touchdown list were Owen Hatfield, Brody Davis, and Thaine Bauer.

Week 2 provided another 2A opponent in Kamiah. The Kubs are a top program and very similar to Council in skill. Council seized a quick 8-0 lead on a 48-yard touchdown strike from Owen Hatfield to Garrison Zielinski. Their next drive found them at Kamiah’s 1-yard line but a tough goal line stand left the drive scoreless. Halftime score was Council 8, Kamiah 0. The second half brought more physical, defensive football and limited opportunities for offenses to seize momentum. Kamiah bounced out to a 12-8 lead before a screen pass to Jim Tucker put Council up 12-8.

It looked as though Council would hang on for the win, but narrow misses on 4th down tackles, and an interception through the fingertips kept Kamiah alive. They scored a go-ahead touchdown with 8 seconds left.

It looked as though Council wouldn’t have a chance, but the game ended in an insane amount of electricity. On the last play of the game, Owen Hatfield launched a 50-yard bomb to Garrison Zielinski, who caught it and fell near the goal line. Council’s sideline erupted and then a few seconds of silent anticipation followed as both sidelines waited for the official’s call. Sadly, Zielinski was ruled down just short of the goal line and that was the game. It was a great football game with two quality opponents who are looking to go far this fall in their respective divisions.

Next, Council has a bye week, followed by a road game at Crane, Oregon, a perennial contender in that state’s 8-man ranks. Next home game will be homecoming vs. Cascade on September 26.
