District will be Seeking Parent Input on Cell Phone Policy Revision
The Council School Board met on October 15th at the High School. Earl Henderson participated by phone. All other board members were present. Business clerk Mindy Ivey and the High School principal, Brian Joyce, were present. There were a handful of teachers and staff in attendance as well.
There is a general public comment period at the beginning of school board meetings. No one asked to make public comment, so this portion was skipped.
Mr. Joyce gave his principal report which was a high level review of district athletics, parent-teacher conferences, Homecoming, Senior Night and standardized testing that was recently completed.
Royce Bauer discussed replacing some of the districts older vehicles, like the activity bus and other vehicles. They are getting old and less reliable. They will be shopping around for options.
The discussion on a potential therapy dog was wrapped up and brought to a close. The district denied this from a liability and insurance stand point.
There was a discussion about student body funds and how they are managed, specifically among the FFA, shop and horticulture classes. A joint ledger will be used so this matter was tabled until the next meeting so they could see how well the joint ledger system works.
The district’s cell phone policy was discussed. The board seems to be in favor of a stricter policy but are looking for parent input as well. They plan on advertising a public comment period for their next two meetings. Bob Grossen mentioned that he would like the change in place by the start of the new semester. The current cell phone policy can be found on the district’s website.
Discussion on the continuous improvement plan was tabled since Mr. Griffin was absent.
The 10 year facilities plan was also discussed. This report will be finished soon and sent to the state to apply for funding to improve the school buildings.
Finally, the District’s financial audit was presented. This audit was for the year ending June 30, 2024. The auditor had nothing but praise for the District’s finances and gave a ‘kudos’ to Mindy Ivey.
