Local residents wait for sunrise Easter morning on Midvale Hill.

He must have thought he had died and gone to heaven. Indeed the hidden traveler camped overnight at the Midvale Hill rest stop was parked right next to the site of the annual Easter Sunrise Service crowd. Although his car windows were covered in blankets, he could not have missed over sixty believers singing “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today!” and “He Lives.” Some of those gathered there were a bit envious of his cozy arrangement since a frigid wind was coming from the north at a good clip.

Before the service coffee and donuts were provided by Cambridge First Baptist Church. Kevin Hooper of Midvale Church of Christ greeted everyone and had the opening prayer. Trudy Morris of the Angel Camp Cowboy Church read Romans 5:8. Jim Hoskins of Cambridge Assembly of God Church led the singing with his guitar. Laurel Sherman helped hold his sheet music in the wind. Chris Blythe of Mivdale Community Baptist Church had a short message entitled “Resurrection: Why Does It Matter?” Since Chris is the newest pastor in the Upper Country he found out that the Easter Sunrise message was always reserved for the newest one. John Loewen of Cambridge First Baptist Church read John 11:25-26. Closing prayer was done by Chuck Shahan of the Angel Camp Cowboy Church.

Some brave souls headed back over to the coffee and donuts, but many just headed for their warm cars. The sun rose over the eastern mountains, which were blessedly free of the nearby cloud bank which hung over most of the sky.

The hidden traveler never did emerge from his car, but it was noticed that his Idaho license plate was from Nez Perce county. He could have had a free breakfast.
