Friends of Weiser River Trail Holds 50K Ultra Race, Awards Burritos

Friends of the Weiser River Trail (FWRT) held their annual 50K Ultra Race and Relay on Saturday. It has been held each year for over a decade. Runners start in Council and finish in Midvale.
This year 75 participants registered, and there were 61 individual finishers, who were each rewarded with a burrito once they crossed the finish line in Midvale.
There were also nineteen relay teams of from two to five people who ran the route (87 team members). This year that included Council Airport Commission President Kathryn Hughes and her two sons, who made the trip from Alabama to run the race with their mom.
Another area local who ran the course this year was Zoe Wessels from Council.
There were runners from other states as well including: Georgia, Washington, Nevada, New York, Utah and even from Quebec, Canada.
There was also a group of adaptive athletes who stuck together during the race.
The relay teams changed runners at each of the aid stations along the route. Some relay participants only had to run 4.1 miles, while others had to run 9.1 miles before they were relieved.
The race slogan was, “I’m just here for the burrito.”
According to FWRT Board Member Beth Ahrend, who has organized the event for the past ten years, it took a whole lot of volunteers to make this race the success that it was.
