Council School Board met on March 19th. Shawn Stanford, Bob Grossen and Julie Pate were present.
Mike Howard gave his Superintendent report. He reported that 6 new students have enrolled with the district in recent weeks. These are mostly students new to the area, but some are homeschoolers enrolling. Parent teacher conferences at the Elementary School had 95% of parents attend these meetings.
Mr. Howard also discussed the levy that the district is asking voters to renew. This levy, if approved, would raise $130,000 per year for 2 years for a total of $260,000. According to his presentation, the cost would be approximately $28.40 per $100,000 of home valuation per year. Levy funds will be used for classroom aides for each classroom, IT support and an instructional assistant. The levy will be put to voters on May 21st. (Editor’s Note: We will have more information on this levy in an upcoming issue)
Mr. Joyce asked the board for approval of a Junior High Golf Team. This will be a club team and will be raising their own funds and not using district money. This was approved by the board.
Several overnight trips were approved by the board for different groups.
The districts drug testing policy and implementation plan was discussed with Mendy Stanford from ACHC. ACHC provides drug testing kits at cost to the district and does not bill for staff time when they help administer these tests.
The District’s advertisement for a new superintendent closed on March 15 and 6 applications have been received. The screening process has started and interviews will be setup in coming weeks.
Four letters of interest were received from individuals interested in filling the vacant Trustee Zone 1 seat, which covers the Fruitvale area. This seat was vacated when Melissa Roundtree resigned recently. The letters were from Ryan Hatfield, Maddi Williams, Steve Ryals and Micah Harley. The board will interview these candidates and nominate one person to fill the remainder of the term until the next election.
After an executive session the board accepted the resignaiton of Trustee Michael Paradis who represented Zone 4. A new bus driver and a new substitute teacher were hired. Mr. Nishitani and Micah Harley were approved as assistant Golf coaches. The board also decided to advertise for the principal position.
