Meadows Valley Community Center: America at 250 Essay Contest and Pancake Breakfast

Evelynn Collings and North Sumpter were awarded $250 each for their winning essays in the Meadows Valley Community Center’s “America at 250” essay contest. The two writers were celebrated at the center’s pancake breakfast on July 4. The contest prompt was sent out to students in Adams County back in April with a June 5 deadline. Contestants were split into two grade level categories with different essay length requirements. The prompt requested original essays of 300 to 1,000 words on what America at 250 years “means to me.”
About 100 guests came and went throughout the three hour breakfast that offered pancakes, bacon, sausage, biscuits and eggs among other specialty items and drinks. Both Collings and Sumpter read their essays to breakfast guests. People from around the community came to support and enjoy the event including many from the center’s neighbors at the fire department who were preparing for their own event that evening. For others the breakfast was perfectly timed to fuel them for the farmer’s market events across the way before heading to later activities around the area.
