Meadows Valley Second Graders Spread Warmth Through Kindness

Did you know that Meadows Valley School classes do a community project each school year? This year, the second grade class along with their teacher Mrs. Ryan McIlvain, is helping keep people warm in emergency situations with a blanket drive benefiting Meadows Valley Emergency Services departments.
“Mrs. Mac” said when the class started brainstorming their project, “the class was interested in first responders and what they do for the community. Many of the children want to be a first responder when they grow up”. The class reached out to Meadows Valley Firefighter/EMT LeAndra Smith to see how they might be able to help. Smith told the students that although the Emergency Department has lots of stuffed animals on hand for comfort items, they could use some blankets, especially as we enter the colder months. With that in mind, the second graders decided to do a blanket drive.
The second graders put together a video to help advertise their project. In the video, Fisher explains “when people crash or there is an emergency, they call 911”. Logan continues by saying, “when they call 911 in the winter, they may be cold. We will donate the blankets to help keep these people warm.” Essy tells us, “Please put the blankets you would like to donate in the box and we will donate them to our local first responders.” Graham explains that “a first responder is someone like an EMT, Police Officer, or Firefighter.” Olivia then let’s everyone know “our donation box is in the entryway of Meadows Valley School. The deadline is November 20th.”
Mrs. Mac says in the future the class hopes to interview some First Responders about their jobs.
The project details and results will be presented at Meadows Valley School’s Celebration of Learning event in January.
The last day to donate blankets for the drive is Wednesday, November 20. The class plans to deliver the blankets to Meadows Valley Emergency Services on Thursday, November 21. The class says a big, “THANK YOU!” to all who help them with their community project.
