A fire started in the early afternoon of Sunday, September 28 at 2386 Spring Creek Lane near Council. Council Valley Fire Chief Shawn Stanford stated that the fire was started due to minors playing with a lighter. The minors in question are not being named. Stanford did say that he had a good talk with these minors and that they will be working some hours at the EMS building to ‘work it off.’

No structures were lost in the fire. However, a trailer containing antiques, family heirlooms and pictures were destroyed according to David Myers, grandson of property owner Connie Smith.

The fire was reported about 1:30 p.m. and soon afterwards Council Fire called for, and received, mutual aid from the US Forest Service, New Meadows and Indian Valley. Stanford would like to thank these agencies for their support. The fire was mopped up about 6:30 p.m..

The fire spread to at least one other property, probably more,  before it was stopped by fire fighters and some local civilian help. Stanford mentioned that there was an individual with a dozer making a firebreak to the north and east of the fire. He didn’t have the name for this person, but he would like to thank them for their efforts in containing this fire.

Estimates for the fire ranged from 25-50 acres from the sources that we spoke with.
