Twelve Meadows Valley Fire Fighters passed their field skills test this past Saturday, May 2 achieving the final step in earning their Red Card Certification for wildland firefighting. Training also included about 40 hours of classroom training and an arduous pack test.

Fire Chief Doug Buys said a high to above average fire season is anticipated this year, so having many in their crew certified is sure to help Meadows Valley. The fire fighters completed Saturday’s certification with instruction from three members of Southern Idaho Timber Protective Association (SITPA). Skills included shelter deployment, hose lays, how to properly make a fire line, communication with Forest Service, Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) and SITPA. Training was held on IDL land off Hot Springs Road in Meadows Valley.

The arduous pack test, which was completed on Sunday, April 19, includes a three mile walk or run while packing 45 pounds and must be completed within 45 minutes. The test measures aerobic capacity, strength, and endurance. Red Card certifications are renewed annually with a Fireline Safety Refresher class.
