The New Meadows Library hosted two storytimes this past week. Twenty-nine children attended monthly storytime on April 8. This month’s theme was Forest. Children listened to the books I Hear You, Forest by Kallie George and Exploring the Fascinating World of the Forest by Magda Garguláková, both read by volunteer Marlene Clark who was dressed as a deer. After storytime, Library Director Audrey Crogh and Library Assistant Stacy Loper led guests in making Scratch Art Animals shaped like porcupines, squirrels, foxes, moose, and bears. Next month’s storytime will host a Bees theme and is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13 at 4:00 p.m. The Summer Reading Program will begin in June.

On April 10 families returned to the library to hear local author Charlotte Armacost read her book The Old Lady on the Porch. Each family received a free copy of Armacost’s book as well as treats, notebooks, and pencils to encourage future writers. I had the pleasure of meeting Armacost at the Community Center’s Tea Party and she explained her writing process of listening and observing the world around her while she sat on her porch drinking coffee. She detailed the tree with its crooked branch, the chipmunks chattering, and the birds all around. She described how listening can be a key to creativity and telling the stories of the world around us.

The library is a fun place to go for many activities. You can take a Maker Class like the recent Cookie Decorating workshop or watercolor painting class. Another watercolor class is coming up on Thursday, May 7 at 6:00 p.m. Cost for the class is $10 per person. You can hear stories from Pete Walker’s recent travels to Peru and the Nazca Lines on Wednesday, April 29 at 7:00 p.m..

In April, the library is also a great place to buy a sweet treat! Throughout the whole month, stop in Monday through Friday 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to check out the bake sale fundraiser and find something new to read or watch. Bakers are also welcome to donate to help the cause. And if chance is your game, the library is hosting a 50/50 raffle all month, so stop in for a ticket or four and try your luck at winning.
