Music and good cheer could be heard in the City Park on Saturday afternoon, May 23 at the New Meadows Memorial Day BBQ & Open Jam. About 40 people came out to join the gathering and share food and good times.

Four musicians brought their guitars, banjo and harmonicas. City Events & Community Outreach Coordinator Stepheny Becker highlighted that the four had never met each other and “It was cool watching them talking and learning and synchronizing.” She said, “There’s just something magic about live music, especially when half the artists are meeting each other for the first time. Didn’t matter who they were, where they worked…music just somehow pulled everybody together. One person starts a tune, another jumps in, and suddenly it turns into something bigger than itself…it was pretty special to watch.”

Donations helped make the event a success with potato chips provided by Brown’s Mountain Market as well as coleslaw and baked beans made by the New Meadows Community Center team. The City provided pulled pork and tableware and Albertson’s donated ten pies. Personal additions like chocolate cake, pickles and brats rounded out the meal.

The City’s Summer calendar is filling up with fun activities including a night with the Circus on June 4, youth baseball games, Battle of the Bands on August 22 and 4th of July celebrations that whole weekend including special Farmer’s Market events, S.A.V.E.S the Day Dinner & Fundraiser and a City organized “old fashioned” fun picnic.
