Platt Resigns, Fry Appointed to Council
The regular monthly meeting of the Cambridge City Council was held on July 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the City Hall Chambers on South Superior Street. The meeting began with the Consent Agenda, which included the approval of the current agenda, previous meeting minutes and payment of bills. Rather than providing comprehensive minutes of this meeting, which are always available on the City of Cambridge’s website, highlights of the July 13 general meeting and the outcome of certain action items are provided below.
After the unanimous approval of the Consent Agenda, the first action item was the reading of the resignation of city council member Delray Platt. The mayor thanked Platt for his service and announced a certificate will be given to Platt in recognition for his service. A motion was made to accept the council members resignation which was passed by all. This was followed by the Mayor announcing Chris Fry as a new city council member. The motion was passed unanimously.
The next action item was Harden Sanitation’s request for a rate adjustment. City council member Taylor Powell abstained from the discussion and recused herself from voting due to a conflict of interest stemming from her husband’s employment with Hardin Sanitation. The rate adjustment request is for a 3% increase based on increased costs for goods and services related to providing garbage service to the area. The rate increase was approved unanimously.
Not an action item but part of an ongoing discussion was the Central Business District. City Clerk Sandra McKee spoke about feedback received from members of the business community about how they feel about the district. This is part of an ongoing dialogue where the city council is trying to determine if any adjustments to the city code are warranted. The city clerk raised the question of whether the Central Business District should be expanded. The council also discussed the difference between the Central Business District and areas that are simply zoned commercial.
Another action item was the tentative budget for fiscal year 2027. The city clerk went over the details of expenditures and increases to the budgets of various funds. A motion was made to approve the tentative budget with no members opposing.
The final item on the agenda was Ordinance No. 5-2026 that designates what residential uses are permitted in the Commercial Zone. No action can be taken as a public hearing must be held first. A motion was made to schedule the public meeting for August 10 and the motion was passed unanimously.
