Last Tuesday evening an impressive lightning storm passed through the area south of Council. Within a couple of hours multiple small fires were visible in the West Mountains area as a result of the lightning. Initially, resources like the Watch Duty app were reporting and tracking these multiple small fires separately. However, these quickly grew together into the Rock Fire.

The fire is on both the Payette and Boise National Forests as well as both Adams and Valley counties. The threat to structures is almost exclusively on the east side of the fire.

As of Tuesday morning the 19th, the fire has burned 2,673 acres and has 575 personnel assigned with 5 helicopters, 23 engines and 14 other pieces of heavy equipment assigned and is 0% contained.

The weather looks to be warmer and dryer in the next few days.

inciweb.wildfire.gov is the government’s official website for the status of large incidents like wildfires. Watch Duty, an app available at your device’s app store, is a great resource to keep updated on these fires as well.
