Rodeo This Weekend, Jr. Last Week
The Adams County Rodeo has been getting bigger every year, growing not just in the number of contestants, but also in the size and scale of the entire event.
Last weekend was the John Balderson Sr Memorial JR Rodeo. The JR Rodeo saw close to 180 entries this year and they gave out close to $10,000 in prizes and money to the contestants. The funds come 100% from the Rodeo’s amazing sponsors, which are mostly local businesses.
The main event, however, is this upcoming weekend. The Rodeo so far has over 400 contestant entries, up from 380 last year. Rodeo Board Secretary, Heather Paradis, said it is one of the largest in Idaho for entries. “I think we’ve just done a really good job with the show and the atmosphere,” she said.
On Friday and Saturday night after the Rodeo, there are two recording artists coming out to do a concert. Dawson Moon, who is charting and from Pocatello, is on Friday night. Saturday night, Kenny Feilder and the Cowboy Killers are returning. Feilder, who was a bareback rider, loved the Adams County Rodeo so much he actually contacted the board this year about coming back. Both concerts are free with rodeo admission.
Every year the Rodeo Board selects a new Grand Marshal and this year it is Sarah Ellis. “We like to get community input,” said Paradis, who said Ellis was nominated by her daughter. She was selected for her years of support she put into the Rodeo and the Board. “She was a very deserving nomination,” said Paradis, “we felt that she was a really good candidate and she deserved it.
Another program they are hoping to grow is the royalty program. This year’s Rodeo Queens are Allie and Maddie Harrington. These two are having quite an exciting year and also took first place in the porcupine races earlier this month!! At the rodeo, they’ve been “busting it on selling tickets” for amazing raffle baskets, working hard to raise money to help build up the Rodeo Royalty program.
The Rodeo also has a growing number of vendors. “The vendor space should be packed,” said Paradis. There will be everything from food and drink, to cowboy hats, boots, and jewelry. “We’re really throwing a lot into making this a fun family filled event,“ said Paradis.
People like coming to Council for the Rodeo. “We hear from people all the time,” said Paradis, “the Rodeo’s the one time of year they come out.” The event also brings in a lot of visitors from out of town, who help bolster the local economy. “They do put quite a bit of money back into town, which is the goal,” said Paradis.
All in all, it is shaping up to be a great year for the growing Adams County Rodeo. With the increased number of contestants, growing concerts and programs, and growing vendors and visitors, the Adams County Rodeo is a favorite for not only locals, but also a wider community. Paradis thought that people liked coming to the Adams County Rodeo for the atmosphere. “The parents can compete. The kids can compete,” said Paradis, “I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we’ve always kept that family friendly feel and we really do our best to take care of the contestants and the youth.”
