On Wednesday May 13, the Council School District Board of Trustees gathered for their monthly meeting. One big topic of discussion at the meeting was the adoption of a new dress code policy for staff. There was public comment from a teacher requesting that teachers be allowed to wear blue jeans and sneakers, which were prohibited by the draft that was published. Zone 2 Trustee Jen Hamaker thought that it was not the job of the school board to dictate so specifically the items that were allowed or not allowed. “I don’t think we should be getting down to the day to day operations as a board.” She thought it should be up to the administration to make decisions on daily operations.

The other trustees saw her point, but disagreed. Zone 4 Trustee Chloe Lucas thought the more guidance they could give the administration the better. Zone 3 Trustee Lynn Mendenhall thought they should be very explicit with the code. In the end, they convinced Hamaker and made some adjustments to the policy to allow both blue jeans and tennis shoes, and made the code applicable to all staff throughout the district.

The board had also been scheduled to interview for the open trustee position for Zone 1 and stated that two applications came in, however, neither applicant could make it to that meeting so they postponed the interviews.
