At Monday’s regular meeting the trustees of Midvale School District were given a many pages survey for each of them to complete regarding the condition of the current school buildings. The school has five buildings and the state is requiring data input from trustees to assess how facility funds will be spent. The school is expecting to receive at least $500,000 which is to last ten years. Superintendent Kylee Morris said there is no guaranteed time when the funds will arrive from the state, perhaps next year. This latest effort by the state to help schools with facilities funding is not totally additional money. It replaces what they were sending for matching maintenance wages and lottery payments. Kylee mentioned that the condition of Midvale’s buildings are safe and well maintained because of consistent school boards and superintendents. The school has kept up with maintenance projects over many years.

The Idaho High School Athletic Association has now designated schools to be A1-A6, with the largest being A6. A1 will no longer be split into two divisions. Midvale will be A1. The next largest (formerly A1 Division 1) will now be A2. The statewide numbers show that A1 has the most schools.

Bus 17 was towed to the repair shop after failing on the freeway and found to need injectors replaced, costing $10,000. After the repair, it was left there for its annual inspection and on the way home from that inspection, the driver tried restarting it after stopping and it failed to start. So back to the shop it went. The shop says the injector pump failed, so it is still in the shop.

Midvale school will have nearly 50 students participating in the Washington County Fair July 29-August 3. They are in 4-H and FFA.

A card was passed around for the board to sign for retiring bus supervisor Doug Hansen. Ken Carpenter will be taking on that job.

Several items on the agenda were approved. First was the Parent and Family engagement Policy which provides for parental involvement in their child’s education. Also approved was the student handbook for 2024-2025, State Special Education Policies and Procedures for 2024-2025, and continuation of legal services with the Idaho School Boards Association.

An Idaho School Board Association resolution was discussed and approved. It addresses the issue of school district trustee spousal employment. The statement of purpose reads: “The intent of the resolution is to develop a process by which small school districts, sub-250 student enrollment, could employ the spouse of one of their trustee members with said trustee member remaining on the school board as sometimes it is quite difficult in a small community to fill both board and staff vacancies with the current rules in place.”

The next regular meeting will be August 26 at 7:00 p.m..
