At Monday’s regular Midvale School Board meeting, Daniel Leuthold was sworn in as trustee from Zone 1 to serve the remainder of the term previously served by Dan Uhlenkott.

Attending the meeting were three seniors who presented their Titan Tots project which they are doing for National Honor Society and FCCLA. They are also student body officers. Danner Morris, Kearney Adams and Stella Warren gave an illustrated report of their efforts to connect the high school students with the elementary on an individual level. The goal is to make sure each elementary student has an older friend. They get to know each other and it has resulted in the students even enjoying lunch together. Activities so far have included a get-to-know-you, pumpkin art project, and handprint turkey art projects. The next event will be a Christmas present, already fully funded, for each elementary student. They will receive personalized knit hats. The group had some of their own money, MTE donated some and other individuals have donated. Besides benefiting the younger ones, Titan Tots seems to have improved attitudes in some of the high school students as they take the project seriously.

The board approved two bids. A paving bid was accepted to redo the lane between the old and new schools and the parking behind. Also accepted was a bid for a John Deere lawn tractor.

The first reading was done of a proposed Medical Treatment Authorization and form. The legislature has required that absolutely no medical intervention may be done without authorization from the parents, not even first aid. However the attorney general has stated that basic first aid may be given. Also there are things like vision screenings that would be helpful for very student. It was discussed at length. The school does have a first aid kit and an epi pen. Trustee Jerry Piper suggested that the school look into also getting Narcon which treats drug problems. The policy will be revisited at the next meeting.

The accreditation process is nearly done. Two trustees volunteered to do the December 16 interview with the authorities. They are Jake Mikek and Daniel Leuthold.

Superintendent Kylee Morris is about halfway through the staff observations. She also reported that attendance is slightly better than last year. At future board meetings, there will be senior projects presented. There are fifteen seniors, with some of them partnering on projects.

The next meeting of the board will be December 16 at 7:00 p.m..
