Visits from Political Candidates
Adams County Sheriff Candidate Kenn Roller visited with the New Meadows City Council at their regular City Council meeting on April 22. The Council and the Mayor asked questions and the candidate gave some history and information. Mr. Roller started out at age 14 in the Sheriff’s Explorer Academy which he wants to initiate in Adams County. He’s willing to pay out of pocket to get things started and then it should be able to be sustained with fundraisers. He retired from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department after more than 33 yrs. Candidate Roller also wants to start community advisory, clergy, business, ranchers and youth councils to get input on the needs of all these groups. He thinks the greatest need in Meadows Valley is having officers trained to recognize and deal with dangerous people because more and more dangerous people are traveling through our area.
Also visiting the Council this evening was State Representative, District 7, Seat B, candidate, Larry Dunn. Mr. Dunn is a veteran of the Marine Corps and the U.S, Navy, went into law enforcement after that, from which he retired. He and his wife started the “Safe Families for Children” program that tries to keep children out of the foster care system. He’s running for office to improve communication between the people in rural communities and what’s going on in the capital city and to support the 10th amendment that limits the control of government in the state.
Candidates Ryan Zollman and Charlie Shepherd will be visiting at the next city council meeting.
Public Works Assistant, Ivan McDaniel, gave a presentation on his training at the Idaho Rural Water Association Conference. He summed up his classes including Jetting Techniques and Standard Operating Procedures. Ivan even brought in an actual control valve to explain how it works.
The mayor reported that Franklin Building Supply is donating the work and supplies to rehabilitate the New Meadows Youth Sports bleachers and Ivan McDaniel will be working to get the goatheads out of the sports field so the surface can be finished.
S & S Engraving will be leaving the Industrial Park after 20 years of doing business there. Interest has already been shown in renting the space.
No representative was present to answer questions for Brown’s Mountain Recycling for the 2nd time. Their appearance at the City Council meeting to answer questions about their monthly report is part of the requirements to continue the CUP process. The council approved starting the proceedings to deny their CUP application.
Getting material from Valley Paving to resurface South Heigho Avenue was also approved.
Kyla Gardner and Diane Hunter are going to the annual Association of Idaho Cities Conference on June 19-21. City Hall will be closed June 19& 20.
Since there was no policy for city employees’ lunch breaks, the council approved adding a half hour paid lunch break with 15 minutes of unpaid time available for lunch if needed.
The public was excused for an executive session and afterward the City Council voted to cancel the contract with Crestline Engineers immediately, foregoing the 90 day notice required in the contract. Gregg Tankersley was present and agreed to foregoing the notice requirement.
