A Brand New Year

Janice Cawyer
January 7, 2026

Happy New Year, everyone! I trust you are well and ready to get on with a brand-new year. It’s like a yearly reset: no matter how bad the last year may have been, there is hope this new year will be better for all of us.

And so we begin anew. Winter is the perfect time to start, it’s a natural lull where the earth takes a break, and so do we. It gives us time to reflect and let our deepest desires take root within us as we wait for Spring to come. If any of what I’ve said resonates with you, I say welcome to my world. If it doesn’t, I’ve wasted two paragraphs of your life, and thank you for your patience.

Some things don’t change much from year to year, such as the programs we offer at the senior center. We continue to serve nutritious meals twice a week and provide transportation for those who need/want it. We hold a monthly blood pressure clinic and operate a food pantry serving the entire community. We offer opportunities to socialize outside our mealtimes through fundraisers and games. There is also a monthly Foot Clinic for those of us who can’t reach our toes anymore, and a Monthly Shopping trip to Ontario.

If you aren’t a member of the senior center but think we might add value to yours, stop by, have a meal with us, and meet some of the characters who call the Cambridge, Midvale, Goodrich Senior Center home. It’s a great “Third place” for everyone.

Never heard of a “Third Place” theory? It is any space outside Home (first place) and Work (second place) where you gather for community building, social interaction, a sense of belonging, idea exchange, etc. Now you know!

On Friday, January 16th, from 4 to 6:30 p.m., we are having a Baked Potato Bar fundraiser, and you are all invited! We are serving Idaho Baked Russet Potatoes, with Chili con Carne, Sour cream, Guacamole, Bacon, Green Onions, and Jalapeno peppers. And anything else we can think of that you might be interested in putting on a baked potato. The cost is $12 per person or $6 for kids 12 and under. There will not be a noon meal that day.

Menu: Wednesday, January 7th: Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Wheat roll, Broccoli/Cauliflower vegetables, Apricots, Salad, and Strawberry Rhubarb Cake. Friday, January 9th: Turkey and Dumpling Casserole, Peas and Carrots, Apricots, Biscuits, Salad, and dessert. Wednesday, January 14th: Meatloaf, Baked Potato. Pears, Peas, Wheat Roll, Salad, and Chocolate Brownies.

We look forward to seeing you!
