This past week, our church held a vacation Bible school for the children of the community. I acted out goofy skits, sang songs with lots of hand motions, taught biblical truths about God through creative lessons and got to know the kids and the other workers better by serving alongside them, each using their gifts for God’s glory. We had a blast watching the kids discover how God created them, knows them, provides a safe place for them, loves them and wants to spend forever with them in heaven.
When people brought their little children to Jesus for a blessing, his disciples rebuked them. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14) So many times in church settings, the children are told to be quiet or are removed so that they won’t be a distraction. However, Jesus wants us to come to him like a child–totally dependent on Him for our life. Like children we must be open to receiving the gift of salvation that he offers to all who would believe that he died on the cross to save us from our sin and rose from the dead, giving us victory over sin and the grave.
One of the best reminders of the importance of sharing Christ with little ones came in our morning staff devotion early in the week. Pastor Wayne shared how it was at a VBS in the mountains of Colorado when he was ten years old that he came to accept Jesus as his Savior and Lord. That gave me inspiration to not grow weary in what we were doing that week. Who knows what future Christian leaders we may have impacted for the kingdom of God? May we each be reminded of what it was like to have faith like a child!
