Woven Together

Pastor Les Sheneberger

Yesterday we got home from holding our newborn granddaughter for the first time. I was amazed at how long her fingernails already were. Her eyes were wide open and looking around at us. We had been anticipating her arrival for so long and she has finally arrived! But long before her birth, she was being cared for by her Creator.

Psalm 139:14-16 describes that precious time: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

Have you ever pictured God as a knitter or a weaver? The creative power and knowledge it would take to gather all of the DNA to weave her into a unique person is astounding! And the fact that this creative process takes place in the mother’s womb makes that place special–a divine workshop where God designs each of us. A definition I found for being “fearfully made” means that each person is created with reverent care, awe-inspiring intricacy, and a unique purpose by God. We were not just rolled out on an assembly line. There is a sacredness to the process.

Not only are we designed by God, but all of our days are written in God’s book in advance of them happening. That gives me great comfort in knowing that God has a plan for my granddaughter’s life. That doesn’t mean that she won’t have choices to make. She will have to decide for herself what or who she will follow after. God has revealed himself to me, even today, through his Word and through observing the beauty of his creation on this idyllic summer day in Council. I know that He will reveal himself to her and pursue a relationship with her as He did with me. It is my prayer as her grandpa that she follows after the One who knit her together and loves her so much, that He sent his Son Jesus to die for her sins and make a way for her to be with God forever!
